Graduates encouraged to 'target social networks for jobs'

Social networking could be an excellent place to get leads for sales jobs, according to Graduate Prospects.

Employers could also be encouraged to confront potential graduate recruits online, where the Facebook generation are likely to feel "entirely comfortable" communicating.

Jayne Rowley, publishing director for Graduate Prospects Ltd, described networking as "a very useful source of leads for jobs".

"As the social networks extend their reach in to professional areas, the Facebook generation will feel entirely comfortable engaging with employers in this way in the future."

Meanwhile, research suggests that there are plenty of technical sales potential in science disciplines, where 42 per cent of graduates achieve first degrees, figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).

Ms Rowley added: "The more resources a graduate can identify, the more choice they are giving themselves."

Meanwhile, sales recruitment in the financial sector could be set to disappoint many graduates this autumn.

Commenting in the Times, Sarah Butcher, editor of recruitment website efinancial careers.com, believes that graduate banking interns may not get jobs in the autumn.
