UK schools 'need more nurses'

British schools should employ 2,000 more qualified nurses to monitor the overall health of school-aged children and advise on issues including teenage pregnancy and alcohol and drug misuse, it has been claimed.

Union Unite is calling on the government to ensure all 152 primary care trusts in England commit to each training ten new school nurses from September 2009.

Ros Godson, Unite/Community Practitioners and Health Visitors Association professional officer for school-aged children, said cash spent on weighing and measuring children when they enter and leave primary school is a waste of public money.

She added: "Children and their parents or carers should be able to rely on the regular support of their school nurse throughout their child's time in school for health concerns when their child isn't ill."

Earlier this week, a spokesperson for the Department of Health said the NHS is committed to meeting its full quota of 500 community development workers by March 31st 2009, although the organisation initially aimed to have all staff in place by the end of March 2006.
