Employers 'hold off on job cuts'

In sectors other than retail, employers are not cutting jobs on a mass scale despite the uncertain economic climate, it has been claimed.

Tom Hadley, director of external affairs at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, said firms and their staff understand that the situation is difficult at the moment and organisations are aware they need to hold onto their best staff and keep them motivated.

He added: "Employers have learnt from the mistakes in the past and apart from in retail we're not seeing the mass culling across the board and we're not seeing employers panicking as much."

Mr Hadley went on to say as a result of the economic downturn, fewer workers are asking for pay rises.

Research sponsored by KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation last month found recruitment consultants reported a decrease in the number of people placed in permanent jobs during December, taking the current period of decline to nine months.
