Retail sales jobs: Cosmetics market proving resilient in the downturn
UK women are consistently buying cosmetics during the recession, according to one expert, which could interest people looking for retail sales jobs.
Vivienne Rudd, editor of global beauty news publication Cosmetics International, said that women see makeup products as a little affordable pick-me-up that can give them immediate gratification when they are bought.
She said: "Amongst the UK population, anecdotally what we're seeing is that the sales of what are seen as affordable products and necessities are holding up well."
Ms Rudd added that sales are holding up well at the higher end of the market, mainly because people buying the more luxury products are not constrained by economic issues.
Retail sales jobs could be boosted by the apparent trend, which is being helped by tourists visiting the UK and loading up on beauty items due to the weaker pound.
The 'lipstick effect', which is when women buy cosmetics to cheer themselves up, could also be bolstering retail sales jobs, according to L'Oreal which said the phenomenon is part of the main trends emerging in the UK beauty industry.
